Alison Griffiths MP was warmly welcomed by the team at Bognor Regis Sailing Club, led by Commodore Rachel Atfield, during their annual open day. The event brought together members, volunteers, and visitors for a celebration of water sports and community spirit.
Once the morning sea fog lifted, the coastline came alive with activity. Attendees enjoyed a wide range of water-based experiences, including wing-foiling, kayaking, dinghy sailing, and windsurfing. Among the highlights was a land-based windsurfing session led by Joey Watts, the third-fastest woman at last year’s Weymouth Speed Week, who guided Ms. Griffiths through her first attempt—an experience she described as “huge fun” and one she looks forward to repeating on the water.
Ms. Griffiths also had the opportunity to speak with Catrine, Eric, and Paul from Sussex Underwater, learning about their efforts to explore and protect the local marine environment. She expressed keen interest in joining them in the future to better understand the ecological importance of the nearby reefs.
Bognor Regis Sailing Club is a small, active, and family-oriented group that welcomes newcomers. The club offers a variety of water sports, including sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, kite-surfing, kayaking, and fishing. Races are held every Sunday during the sailing season (weather permitting), with additional opportunities to get out on the water on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings.
